Cost Management in Shipbuilding Projects

The major part of the ship’s cost is defined before the beginning of production. Therefore, the planning and controlling of the cost should start with the design and engineering process.

The software system "costfact" supports the planning, analysing and controlling of the product’s cost in all shipbuilding phases, beginning with the early phases of design and engineering, to the calculation accompanying the production and finally, to the analysis of already concluded projects.

Main functions of costfact:

Cost planning (both top down and bottom up) and cost controlling according to the vessel’s building structure.
Cost estimations for new projects based on existing calculations and the incorporation of technical parameters including regression analyses.
Risk analysis to calculate the extent to which future actual costs could deviate from forecasted costs.
Calculation of function costs and controlling of target cost attainment.
Analyses of cost drivers and of the additional costs caused by change proposals, as well as cost filters.
Automatic transfer of calculations between different building group systems and other calculation structures.
Structured and simplified specification creation including automatic consistency checks for specifications and cost prognoses.
Life Cycle Costing to incorporate and analyse the cost of the whole in-service phase including the consideration of uncertainties.

costfact is a .NET application with three-layer architecture and object-oriented design. costfact is able to unite information from different systems containing cost data (e.g. ERP or CAM systems) and shows the cost in the ship’s building structure.
