Cost Management in Shipbuilding Projects

The major part of the ship’s cost is defined before the beginning of production. Therefore, the planning and controlling of the cost should start with the design and engineering process.

Assigned Cost and Accumulated Cost

The software system "costfact" supports the planning, analyzing and controlling of the product’s cost in all shipbuilding phases, beginning with the early phases of design and engineering, to the calculation accompanying the production and finally, to the analysis of already concluded projects.

Cost management support functions of costfact (examples):

  • Cost planning (both top down and bottom up) and cost controlling in all shipbuilding phases according to the vessel’s building structure.

  • Cost estimations for new projects based on existing calculations.

  • Various cost analyses, such as cost filters and cost driver analysis.

  • Combination of manual cost inserts and imports of ERP data.

  • Risk analyses of the estimations.

  • Organisation and administration of all calculation projects by one single system.

costfact is a .NET application with three-layer architecture and object-oriented design. costfact is able to unite information from different systems containing cost data (e.g. ERP or CAM systems) and shows the cost in the ship’s building structure.
